Day 26

"God Comes First!"

Deuteronomy 6:1-9

How does someone put God first
in their life? If God has first place
in your life, what evidence would there be
to prove that? Emotion is hard
to prove or hard to use to verify anything.
It's too easy to simply say, “I love the
Lord above all else.” How could you test that?

Perhaps this would help. Think
about your time, talents, and treasures.
Examine these areas of your life
and see where your priorities
lie, what you seem to value most.
How much time do you spend with God,
the one you should put first and
love the most? Include prayer, Bible
reading and study, worship, and
talking to others about Him.

What about talents? How much energy do
you spend on His business versus yours?
Music, reading, writing, creative work,
even what you do for a living -
just how much of what you do with
your abilities is about and for God?

And then there are the treasures;
how much of the money that you earn
with your God-given abilities do you
use for His kingdom versus your
own desires, goals, and pleasures?
All of this should help you to determine
just where God stands in your life.
First place? Well, that certainly
should be the goal. Let’s pray
about it and work on it!

Prayer: Dear Lord, we really would like
for You to be first in our lives.
We know that is best. We confess
that it is not always true.
Help us do the things that would
put you first and keep you first!

P.S. Over the years I've heard from
lots of people about their marriages.
That is our number one earthly relationship.
I've never had complaints that
one’s spouse spends too much time
or money making them happy!
No one has ever said to me, “I wish
he or she would stop putting me first!”
It's usually the other way around –
“I wish just once in a while
they would think of me first.”
I suspect that God could say the same thing about us!
